They went to housekeeping south of Loudonville on the home far mowned by
Elmer's father, George, in 1916 after Elmer's brother, Fred, moved to a
farm he had purchased near Big Prarie. Elmer went to work as section
hand on the Walhonding Branch of the Penna RR from high school until he
started farming. Frances worked as a bookkeeper for Loudonville Farmer's
Equity from high school until after marriage. In 1920 he started
teaming, hauling old-field supplies, for drilling operations in the
area. (same as a truck driver now). A team of horses, then, earned as
much as an able bodied man, and the wages of a man and his team was
considered to be an excellent income at that time. They moved to a house
just off of S Mt Vernon Av and, in addition to hi steaming operations, he
farmed for his father-in-law, Fred Stitzlein. In 1923 most of the oil
and gas activities declined and they moved to the Howard Workman farm
just west of Spellacy Road where the Turkey Ridge School House was once
located. They had started busing students and closing country schools
just prior to that time. In 1931 they moved back to his father's farm
where they continued until the early 40's. They sold out and moved to
Loudonville where Elmer owrked for Loudonville Milling, Sun shine
Biscuit, and Arnholt's Produce until retirement and a comparatively early
death. Frances worked for Gardner's Variety & Appliance, Loudonville
Rationing Board during and shortly after WW 2, and then for JJ Welsch
Insurance Agency until her retirement. She lived a very satisfying
retired life until her death in July 1980. They bought the Stitzlein
home place after Fred & 'Till' died in 1940. They moved there, 311 N Mt
Vernon Ave, Loudonville in 1943.
Elmer, Frances and Lawrence, who was just a baby, were all deathly sick during the 'flu' epidemic of 1918. There were many, many people sick, so many in fact, that there were hardly enough well people to care for them. My father sent me down to take care of them and to keep the fires going. I was age 14 at the time. Grandpa (George) Young came out from Loudonville twice a day to feed the livestock and do the milking. He would also bring out supplies and medicine along with soup or other food that the grandparents sent out. I could do some cooking but limited mostly to fried foods. They were bedfast for over a week and then I became sick and they had to care for me. There were many deaths from this disease and a couple families in the Loudonville vicinity lost 5 members from death.

Born in Tiger Valley, Knox County. He did carpentry work with his brother
Manuel; and while working on a barn one day north of Danville, Ohio,
looked up and said "some day I would like to own that place," which he
later bought and farmed until his death. John Bross lives on the same
farm today. After his wife's death, for five years he served his little
family both as father and mother, and expressed that the happiest time of
his life was when his children were all small and he was working hard to
make them a home.
At the age of 15 years, Simon united with the German Lutheran Church and in the winter of 1898, he was baptized into the Church of Christ at Millwood, Ohio. Later he became a member of the Danville Church and was faithful to the church all the following years, many times going to church in bad weather when others, younger in years and nearer the church, did not venture out. At the time of his death he was an elder of the church and served for a number of years. He often sang at church funerals and in the church choir.
As a young man he took singing lessons from a man in Tiger Valley. He was a good and considerate neighbor, and spent his life working and planning that all of his children might have a home. His last illness was short, and his departure came as a shock to all who knew him. His memory will long be remembered as a father, neighbor and Christian gentleman.
