Michael Newbold (or Newbould, as he and his sons spelled the nam e) was born in the parish of Handsworth, York, England on July 1, 1623, and died in Burlington County, New Jersey in 1692. Hands worth lies some five miles southeast of the city of Sheffield, a nd here Michael remained for forty years, marrying Ann (surnam e unknown) and bringing up a large family. About 1660 he remove d to the hamlet of Mossborough, Eckington parish, Derbyshire , a few miles to the south. In 1664 he took a lease of Park Gat e Farm, situated on a hilltop directly overlooking Sheffield, an d owned by the Earl of Shaftsbury.
Michael and Ann had six sons and five daughters, all born in Eng land over the years from 1653 to 1672. About 1675 a movement which attracted much attention was the offer of an abundance of cheap land in the American Colonies. Undoubtedly, the burden of Michael's large family necessitated some radical improvement of his finances; in 1677 he sent his son John to accompany a relative Godfrey Newbould in the ship Shield to investigate conditions in the New World.
On January 28, 1677/8, Michael bought from the proprietors of West Jersey, one-eighth of three-ninetieths of a share of the province. In or about 1680 he arrived in Burlington County, New Jersey, with his wife and nine of his eleven children. On September 13, 1681, four hundred acres were surveyed for Michael, lying seven miles to the southeast of the town of Burlington, a mile from the present village of Columbus, And two and a half miles from Jobstown. In 1685, he took up another tract of four hundred and fifty acres at Oneonickon, bisected by the present Moun t Holly-Freehold road. Most of these original land-holdings still continue in possession of descendants.
Michael Newbold was a mature man of more than fifty-five years when he immigrated to America. So far as we know, his life in the New World was essentially that of a yeoman or gentleman farmer. The only
office he is known to have held was overseer of highways for the township of Mansfield, to which he was elected June 5, 1690. Michael's will is dated November 19, 1692. He died quite shortly thereafter, for on January 23, 1693 the inventory of his estate was taken. It disclosed a valuation of L 772 14s. 3d., an unusual degree of wealth for that period. The inventory included a considerable sum of money owing him in England, which he had been unable to collect
. Michael NEWBOLD was born on 1 Jul 1623 in Hansworth, co. York,
ENG. He was baptized on 13 Jul 1623 in Hansworth, co. York, ENG. He
signed a will on 19 May 1690 in Burlington Co., NJ. He died about
1692/93 in Burlington Co., NJ. He had an estate probated on 25 Feb
1692/93 in Burlington Co., NJ. He was married to Anne TOPPING about 1658
in co. York, ENG.
Family History of Philadelphia p.268-9: The surname of Newbold is a name
derived from residence at "Newbold", an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "the
new Habitation". There are several parishes and hamlets of this name in
numerous counties in England. In 1664, he removed to Sheffield Park,
Yorkshire, where he held lands as tenant-in-fee of the Earl of
Shaftsbury, until his emigration to NJ in 1680. He brought with him from
England his wife, Anne, and nine of his eleven children and settled in
Burlington Co., NJ. He was possessed in all, of a large personal estate,
a goodly part of which was in England; several plantations and 600 acres
of land not yet taken, besides several lots in Burlington. He was one of
the first magistrates of Burlington Co., and prominent in public
affairs. His will, which was dated May 19, 1690, and proved Feb 25,
1692-93, a codicil having been added Nov 19, 1692, mentions his wife,
Anne; ,,,son Michael...
