James was born on a farm in Coshocton Co, OH. I know he had at least 3 brothers. He had a fairly good education, served in the Civil War and held a commission when hw was released. Of his service, I know only that he was in the Battle of Gettysburg.

After marriage they started farming near Tiverton Center in Coshocton Co. They then bought a farm in Knox Co in the valley north of Jericho School wherethey prospered and raised their family. He was able to buy three other farms and started four sons in farming including Orlando who farmed the home place. They raised six sons and three daughters and always had some homeless and orphaned children around. They raised all of their own food excepting staples (salt, surgar, coffee, tea, etc) which they bought in the store. My father was amazed, when he was courting my mother, that they put up about 6 barrels of sauerkraut every year. They also salted down ad dried or otherwise preserved large quantities of fruits, vegetable, and meats. Canning as a method of home preservation of foods was not yet available. Some years after Eva died James remarried and purchased a home on the east main street in Danville. A few years later they moved to Loudonville, first on W. Main (Maple Heights), then on S Water St near his daughter Mary (Heyde) where he died.

Listed in the 1880 OH census, Tiverton Twp, Page 219A, Coshocton Co as being 34 years old which implies a DOB of 1845 or 1846.
