Richard Henry Schneider was born at Greer, Ohio (Knox County) on Dec. 19,
1908. Family moved to a 25 acre farm about 2.5 miles north of
Loudonville, OH, in 1913 and he attended the red brick schoolhouse
grades 1 through 8, although the family moved to the Henry Schneider farm
farther up the road in 1918. He graduated from Loudonville High School in
1926. During his freshman year (I was a senior) we drove a horse and
buggy to school. From then on they walked down to the Ashland Road and
rode in a school bus made from a truck. His senior year he and Russell
sometimes drove the car (a 490 Chevrolet Touring car) if Dick had
football practice. He played fullback on the team. There is a picture
of the team in the 1926 High School Annual. (We have a copy of the
Annual here which was probably his, so if you do not have one you may
have this one). I will mail it if you like. We also have a picture of
the car. One year he raise a pig to enter in the Loundonville Fair and
won third prize. The last two years in High School he worked summers at
the Charlie Heyde farm. He came home on weekends. Mrs. Heyde was a
sister of Charles Kettering, the inventor, and this was the old Kettering
home although all new buildings were there then. One day when Mr.
Kettering was visiting there he had Dick take him to Ashland in his (Mr.
Kettering's) car. When he first graduated he worked for a very short
while in a restaurant (owned by Roy Keys) on North Water St. in
Loudonville. He then went to the Loudonville Milling Co. This was hard
work, carrying sacks of grain, etc. Then he worked for Mr. Tomich,
driving a truck and buying eggs an d chickens from farmers in the area
and taking them to Cleveland . In 1930 he started working for the
Standard Oil Co., at the station here in Loudonville. The next year he
was promoted to manager, then in 1946 he was appointed fuel oil service
salesman. He became a dealer salesman in 1949.
