Gus was his father's right hand while they operated the store i n Greer.
When the business went bad, he took charge of all arrangements for the
family's move to Lake Charles. Adam and Glenn found employment but for
some time their wages were very poor. Gus went into the army shortly
after arriving in Lake Charles an d served in the Infantry in France
until after the end of WW1 (P vt Co. B 140MG Bn. WWI). After returning
home he joined the volunteer fire department at his first opportunity and
was among the first firemen on the payroll when the city took over the
department. The department grew with the city and Gus progressed i n the
ranks until he was appointed Chief. He retained that posit ion until he
retired with 50 years of service in the Fire Dept. The Central Fire
Station and the Firefighters Training Center in Lake Charles are
dedicated in his honor. Shortly after hi s retirement, he was appointed
Fire Marshal for the Port of Lake Charles where he was able to make use
of his knowledge of fir e fighting and fire prevention until his sudden
death from a stroke. He was a respected man in the community and very
much love d by his family.

Clarence grew up on the family farm about 5 mi south of Loudonville and
attended Ball Alley (Country) School. They started their married life as
farmers and later moved to Loudonville where he was employed by Arnholt's
Produce and also by F E Myers Co of Ashland, from where he retired. They
still live in Loudonville and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary
on July 19 1981. They have 6 children.
